Fight against the death penalty
The 10th of October 2007 marks the 5th annual World Day against the Death Penalty. To mark this occasion the European Commission is releasing a free to air Video News Report which looks at the EU's international stance on the Death Penalty. As Karel Kovanda of the European Commission explains 'Among the basic values that we in Europe cherish is human dignity and the inviolability of the human person'. The report visits the St Egidio organization in Rome, founders of the 'Cities for Life' annual event. Across the world on November 30th over 1000 symbolic monuments are illuminated from the Coliseum in Rome to the Plaza de Santa Ana in Madrid, to the Central Obelisk in Buenos Aires. The VNR also travels to the Philippines, one of only 4 countries to have reinstated, and abolished again, the Death Penalty, and to the US, where the potential for miscarriages of justice is an argument holding the attention of legislators.
