Greater Austin - Walk Now for Autism 2008
More than 2,700 Participants Join Greater Austin Walk
On Saturday, Nov. 15, 2,700 people joined the 4th annual Greater Austin Walk Now for Autism at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas, a nearly 60 percent increase in participation over last years event, and raised over $150,000.
Walkers were entertained by DJ Biff Liebbe and musical performances by the Billy Eli Band, The Maelstrom and Girl in the Closet. Quilt decorating was among the many family-friendly activities, as walkers were encouraged to decorate a quilt square representing their team. FOX 7 anchor Loriana Hernandez, who has a niece with autism, was a first-time emcee of the Greater Austin Walk. During opening ceremonies, local public figure Carol Strayhorn (One Tough Grandma) presented a check for $1,000, representing her fundraising efforts.
The Walk hosted a resource fair which showcased 33 companies and organizations, including Thoughtful House, a therapeutic provider which fights for the recovery of children with developmental disorders through the unique combination of medical care, education, and research.
A number of generous sponsors contributed to the success of the Greater Austin Walk Now for Autism, especially Nikken, which contributed $20,000 and hosted a booth at the event. Nikken also formed a 50 member corporate Walk team that has raised $5,900 to date. HEB also made a financial contribution, as well as providing food for walkers.
