COLD WATER BOOT CAMP CANADA
Cold Water Boot Camp Canada. MYTH: Most People believe they don't need a life jacket "if they are close to shore", or "because they can swim" and that "they can put a life jacket on in the water" if they need it. FACT: In 80% of drownings a life jacket was not worn. Research has also demonstrated that in cold water, under 50F or 20c, the risk of drowning increases by 500%, and many of those drownings will occur within 6 feet (2 meters) of safety. REALITY: Cold Water Boot Camp takes nine hard volunteers from across Canada and puts them into cold water to learn what really happens. The instructor is Dr.Gordon Giesbrecht, Professor of Thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and an expert in the study of the effects of cold water on the human being. Under Dr. Giesbrecht's (AKA "Professor Popsicle") watchful eye, the volunteers face the indisputable fact - that the difference between becoming a Statistic and a Survivor ... is wearing a Life jacket. James Chaney Cross
Civil Rights Cross
This sculpture is based upon a cross that was burned on the lawn of Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi in the autumn of 1963. The students were being encouraged by Ed King, the campus minister to go into the city and to try and desegregate the churches on Sunday morning.
That not only led to the arrests of the students, but also had the KKK come and burn this cross on the college lawn. Ed King gave the cross to the United Methodist who was in the process of trying to desegregate the denomination nationally. So, this cross became the symbol for the desegregation of our denomination in 1964 to 1968.
It was taken to Pittsburgh at the general conference and walked around the conference hall and became the rallying point. After all of that, the cross was given to Gerald Forshe, a pastor here in Chicago, who brought it back and took it to Jack Kearney who was a very well regarded sculpture in town.
Kearney took that charred wooden cross, encased it in a kind of skin of metal, so that it wouldnt disintegrate. And then placed on it, the obviously African American, distressed, truncated Christ. And so Jerry has had this sculpture for over 40 years in his own possession.
But when Jerry was very ill last spring he wanted to make sure that this church received it so that it could be put on public display. And so this has been not only a gift to the church but also one that we can make available to people who can come by and know the story and know that it is not only something that referrers back to 1963, but it, but it has a great deal of power today.
We had a guest over the summer who came to worship. He was a retired university administrator from Mississippi. He took a look at this and saw the figure on the cross and immediately said, That is James Cheney. James Cheney was one of the three young men who were murdered when they were trying to register voters in Mississippi in 1963, the only African American among the three. And so at least for that person, he saw in this figure, that historical moment.

Condoleezza Rice performs on the piano at Buckingham Palace
The outgoing US Secretary of State was accompanied by Louise Miliband, the wife of Foreign Secretary David Miliband, and three members of the London Symphony Orchestra in her performance of Brahms.
The stateswoman who is a concert level pianist was allowed to use a music room at the palace after expressing a wish to play for the Queen before leaving office at the end of the Bush administration in January.
The Queen listened to part of the performance, and afterward presented Miss Rice with an audio recording of the recital as a gift.
Miss Rice started playing the piano as a child and planned a career in music, originally enrolling at university to study the subject before switching to political science. At 15 she performed Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, as a prize for winning a student competition.
She was taught the instrument by her mother, who was a music teacher, and regularly performs private chamber music recitals with four friends, leading to her be described as the world's most prominent amateur musician.
Miss Rice was visiting London before heading for Brussels to attend a meeting of Nato leaders. Earlier in the day, she met Gordon Brown and Mr Miliband.--Telegraph
